Rihanna’s Edgy Photo Shoot

Rihanna graces the cover of W magazine’s September, special collector’s issue, transformed as a regal icon in war and peace.

In the fashion portfolio, photographed by Steven Klein and styled by Edward Enninful, Rihanna plays the role of a fearless leader and warrior in a dark, dystopian future.]

The portfolio was conceptualized as a film, complete with an original short story by screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker (who is known for writing the screenplay for the movie Se7en). The narrative follows a group of warriors fighting for freedom of expression, with Rihanna in the lead role, in a far-off world dominated by thinking machines.

Designers including Miuccia Prada and Gareth Pugh were commissioned by W to create custom pieces for Rihanna’s shoot.

For the September issue, W enlisted Terry Jones, legendary British art director, as a guest creative collaborator, who created a one-off logo and special graphic treatments. Other collaborations and special issues will follow in the seasons to come.

The cover story reflects the issue’s central idea of transformation, while other portfolios in the issue address the themes of “freedom,” “attitude,” “self-expression,” and “identity.”
